Switching internet? Run this simple changeover checklist

Switching internet? Run this simple changeover checklist

Confirm the new service before touching the old one

Order first, cancel second. Get an installation or activation date from the new provider, verify the address and plan details on the order confirmation, and only then schedule your current service's end date for a day or two after.

Check what you owe, and what they owe you

Review your current plan for early-termination fees (rare on 2026 internet plans, standard on satellite TV mid-contract) and unreturned-equipment charges. Some providers, Spectrum among them, offer contract buyouts up to $500 when you switch to them.

Inventory the equipment

List every rented device: modem, router, extenders, TV boxes, remotes. Return them within the window (usually 10–30 days) with a receipt, unreturned-equipment fees of $50–$200 per device are the most common switching surprise.

Plan the overlap day

Keep both services live for one overlap day if you work from home. Reconnect smart devices to the new network in one sweep: a printed list of your WiFi-dependent gear (cameras, thermostats, speakers, TVs) turns an evening of frustration into 30 minutes.

Lock in the win

Note your new plan's rate, any promo end date and the gift-card redemption steps (Verizon's current offer, for instance, requires staying in good standing before the card is emailed). Set one calendar reminder for 11 months out to re-shop if you're on a 12-month promo.
