Internet keeps dropping? Diagnose it in 15 minutes

Narrow it down: one device or all of them?

When the internet 'drops', check a second device immediately. One device dropping is a device problem (usually its WiFi adapter or power-saving settings). Everything dropping at once points at the router, the line or the provider.

Wired or wireless drops?

If you can, plug a laptop into the router. If wired stays up while WiFi drops, it's a WiFi problem, usually interference or an overheating router. If wired drops too, keep going down this list.

Watch the modem lights during a drop

The single most useful diagnostic: when the connection dies, look at the gateway. If the internet/globe light goes out or turns red, the problem is between your home and the provider, that's their side to fix. If lights stay normal while devices drop, the problem is inside your home.

Check for a pattern

Drops every evening at 7-10 PM suggest neighborhood congestion (common on older cable segments). Drops when the microwave runs or the neighbor gets home point to 2.4 GHz interference. Drops in rain point to a damaged outdoor line, ask the provider for a line check, it's free.

The cable check nobody does

Finger-tighten the coax connector behind the modem and at the wall plate. A quarter-turn-loose coax connector is responsible for an absurd share of 'random' cable-internet drops. On fiber, make sure the thin fiber cable isn't pinched or bent sharply behind furniture.

When to escalate, and what to say

If the modem loses sync (lights out) more than a few times a week, call the provider and use the words 'intermittent disconnections, modem loses sync, I'd like a line quality check'. That routes you to a real diagnostic instead of a restart script. Log the drop times first, it halves the call.

If the provider can't fix it, switch without downtime

Persistent drops on an aging line are a reason to change technology, not just plans: fiber where available, or a different cable segment. Order the new service, confirm the install, then cancel the old one, our switching checklist covers the overlap trick.
